Keywords :

One of FIACAT's main missions is to strengthen the capacities of its members so that they become key players in the fight against torture and ill-treatment and for the abolition of the death penalty in their countries.

To this end, FIACAT regularly provides training to the members of its network, notably on :

  • The understanding of advocacy and its tools, in particular in relation to international (United Nations) and regional (European Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and Council of Europe) mechanisms for the promotion and protection of human rights, their functioning and the role of civil society
  • On the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and fundamental judicial guarantees;
  • On the abolition of the death penalty.

Since 1997, FIACAT has been organising the biennial Norbert Kenne Cycle together with the Association for the Promotion of Human Rights in Central Africa (APDHAC), the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC), the Human Rights Institution of Lyon (IDHL) of the Catholic University of Lyon and the Unesco Chair "Memory, Cultures and Interculturality". This is a training cycle for human rights defenders committed to fighting torture and ill-treatment in French-speaking Africa.

FIACAT is also associated with Synergies coopération for the development of a training course entitled "Prisons: preventing torture and ill-treatment".
