In May 2025, FIACAT and ACAT Burundi launched a project to monitor and document acts of torture and ill-treatment during the pre-electoral and electoral context in Burundi. As the country enters a new election cycle amid regional instability, numerous violations targeting opposition voices (political opponents, journalists) have been documented, including summary executions, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests and detentions. Regular reports will be produced and shared with regional and international human rights mechanisms to help prevent further violations, ensure protection for victims, and hold perpetrators accountable. It is crucial to urge the Government of Burundi to honor its national and international human rights commitments and guarantee the conditions necessary for free, fair, and credible elections.
